Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a scientifically researched therapy that has been used to treat depression, Bi-polar Disorder, anxiety, eating disorders and obesity. It a therapy that is based upon the belief that our own thoughts cause our emotions and behaviors, rather than the situation outside of us that is not good that causes us to feel badly, in other words: negative thoughts lead to negative feelings. The theory is that if we can change the way we think about a situation, then our feelings about the situation will change.
Most of us would like to have as few uncomfortable, unhappy or terrible experiences in life as possible, but when this happens, sometimes we make illogical connections between what has happened and who we are inside. For example, a person who has been laid off often thinks “I am a terrible person”, when actually it is the situation that is terrible, not the person who is laid off! CBT helps us to recognize the triggers in ourselves that we can change, so the way we see things in our lives, will change.
