A Month of Sundays

By Cait Zarro

The other day I was speaking with a friend who is a teacher. She referred to the month of August as “a month of Sundays” for teachers with the return to work looming over them the entire month. We laughed and agreed how that could be, but the idea sat with me for a while. What a bummer to not enjoy most of the month because one is so preoccupied with work coming around the bend! But we all do it. Sundays seem to be the day that most begin to get stressed by work and responsibilities looming over Monday morning, rather than to be the day we enjoy because we are “off”! I still do it and I don’t even work Mondays!

Maybe we can really make some small changes in attitude that result in bigger changes in feelings. Setting up mini rewards, breadcrumbs if you will, throughout the week (or month!) to get you excited about the week and lead you back to your weekend. Maybe you’ll stop at your favorite coffee shop on Monday morning, or see a movie after work. Maybe you plan a “date night” or a small get together with friends on *gasp* a Wednesday! Weekends are wonderful, but weekdays make up far more of our lives. My goal is to work a little harder to make them a little sweeter and to in turn, make Sundays a little less sour.
